Qiddiya Cliff Projection Mapping
A Record-Breaking Projection Masterpiece

In alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, the Qiddiya Investment Company (QIC) embarked on an ambitious project to establish Qiddiya as the nation’s premier hub for entertainment, sports, and arts. A pivotal element of this initiative was the transformation of the iconic Tuwaiq mountain cliff into a dynamic canvas for large-scale projection displays. The objective was to create a permanent projection mapping installation that would captivate audiences and serve as a versatile platform for various events and announcements.

In collaboration with Martin Professional Middle East, the project began with plans to project a 100x100-meter Qiddiya logo onto the mountain. After a successful on-site demo using two Barco UDX projectors, the vision grew. The team conducted laser scanning and projection studies, leading to the use of 84 Barco UDX-W40 projectors placed across nine sites in custom marine containers. Covering 32,000 sq. meters, it became the world’s largest permanent projection mapping installation.

Impact

The inaugural display coincided with the closing ceremony of the 2020 Dakar Rally, where the projection system served as a stunning backdrop, showcasing synchronized lighting, laser effects, audio, and fireworks. This event not only captivated over 40,000 attendees but also garnered international attention, positioning Qiddiya as a burgeoning cultural landmark. The projection system continues to be a central feature for various events, symbolizing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to innovation and cultural development.
